November Event Highlights :: Luncheon at Riverwalk

November 14th Luncheon with David Halsey, Floral Director, The

Meetinghouse Companies, Inc. at The Riverwalk was a huge success.

Thank you so much, Molly Connor with Molly Connor Photography, for the event photographs! David Halsey, Floral Director at The Meetinghouse Companies, Inc., spoke to us about Event Décor Trends, Tricks and Tips. An insightful presentation showing what is going on in event décor and design along with a hands on demonstration of how to achieve the “look” and do it profitably. David shared his knowledge, experience, and love of the special events industry and hopes to inspire the individual and further the industry as a whole. David was a super fun speaker and enjoyed by all!

Thank you so much to our event sponsors The luncheon event was definitely a success and we have so many people to thank for putting it all together and making it happen. Gus Rojas and all the Five Star Catering at the Riverwalk staff did an amazing job. It was a great luncheon and we loved the food stations! Who would have thought to put soup in an ice sculpture. Special thanks to Lisa with Party Time Rental for their ivory imperial stripe tablecloths, Cathy and Akimee with Akimee Custom Floral Design for their super fun and creative centerpieces and Molly with Molly Connor Photography for the gorgeous photographs that captured the fun we had with each other. An insightful presentation showing what is going on in event décor and design along with a hands on demonstrations of how to achieve the “look” and do it profitably. From turning basic elements into something “wow” and incorporating technology into event design there is something here to appeal to everyone and every budget.

David Halsey a native of Charleston, Illinois, David holds a B.S. in Agricultural Communications from the University of Illinois and certification in interior design. As Floral Director with The Meetinghouse Companies, Inc. in Elmhurst, Illinois, David specializes in event design and floral décor. David is a recognized leader and trendsetter regularly speaking at Event Solutions “Idea Factory”, Special Event Magazine “The Special Event”, The American Rental Association’s Rental Show and other industry conferences. He has been a featured speaker at ISES chapters across the country and worked on award programs for ISES, MPI, and NICE. David shares his knowledge, experience, and love of the special events industry and hopes to inspire the individual and further the industry as a whole.

What is your title and position at your current company?

I am the owner of Five Star Catering. In June of 2009, Gus with four business partners, opened up a catering business-Five Star Catering. His wife Maryann Rojas serves as a co-owner and is the General Manager at the Primo West Location.

What does your company do? How is it different than others like it?

Five Star Catering covers social, corporate, non-for-profit organizations and religious functions with weddings currently making up a large portion of their day-to day business. We are in the catering business and we really work hard in creating an unforgettable event for our clients utilizing our creativity and our quality in food and service. We create relationships. Five Star Catering, established by Gus and Maryann Rojas is known for its full service catering and event production. Five Star Catering is popular with clientele who seek local or international fresh cuisine, outstanding customer service and that one of a kind event. A part of the Rojas vision has always been to bring the Wow! Factor to each event by incorporating creative ideas with their unique personal touch.

How many years have you been in the industry?

I have been in the Industry for over 30 years. Owner/Operator, Gus Rojas, is a distinguished catering and banquet executive. He has spent the last 30 years honing his catering and culinary expertise at some of the best hotels, convention centers and stadiums in the US and Mexico, including The Indiana Convention Center, McAllen Convention Center, Walter E. Washington Convention Center, RCA Dome, Belmont Park Race track, Hyatt Regency, Marriott, Hilton as well as overseeing the opening of the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale AZ. Gus is proud to announce that Five Star Catering at the Riverwalk was awarded with the Best Venue in the city for 2012 by the Indy A-list.

What was your very first job?

I started working at a Pizza Hut

What lead you into the event industry?

I grew up in the same house where the best chef in the world was my personal chef, my beautiful (mom) and that was where my appreciation for food started; Then I went to school for Restaurant and Hotel Management and That is where I knew what I was going to be doing for the rest of my life.

Why did you decide to join ISES?

I know a lot of people in the Industry and everybody was telling me how great this organization is. So I decided to be part of the best in the Industry.

What is your most memorable event? Why?

I remember several but two that really stick into my mind are; the inauguration for George Bush in Washington DC. And the other one is the largest plated meal ever served for 16000 people also in Washington DC for Alpha Kappa Alpha Centennial Celebration. These two events were very high profile and the planning and logistics to execute something of this magnitude was absolutely incredible.
